Background of the Study
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a severe and life-threatening condition characterized by rapid onset of hypoxemia and difficulty breathing due to widespread inflammation in the lungs. It can result from various causes, including trauma, pneumonia, sepsis, and inhalation injuries (Andrews et al., 2023). ARDS is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in both developed and developing countries, with high rates of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and prolonged mechanical ventilation. Nurses, particularly those working in critical care and emergency departments, are central to the management of ARDS, as they provide direct patient care, assist with ventilator management, and monitor for complications such as sepsis and multi-organ failure.
At Gombe State Specialist Hospital, located in northeastern Nigeria, the incidence of ARDS is rising, largely due to infectious diseases, including pneumonia and sepsis, that are prevalent in the region. However, the preparedness of nurses for handling ARDS cases, which require specialized knowledge and skills, has not been thoroughly assessed. Studies have shown that proper training, equipment, and protocols are crucial for improving patient outcomes in ARDS, yet many healthcare workers in resource-limited settings may not have access to the necessary resources or training (Ojo et al., 2023).
This study will evaluate the preparedness of nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital for managing ARDS cases, examining their knowledge, skills, and adherence to clinical guidelines.
Statement of the Problem
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) presents a major challenge in the critical care setting, requiring rapid diagnosis, prompt management, and continuous monitoring. However, the preparedness of nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital for handling ARDS cases remains unclear. Without proper training and resources, nurses may be less capable of providing optimal care for ARDS patients, leading to worsened outcomes. This study seeks to assess nurses’ preparedness for handling ARDS cases, exploring their knowledge, skills, and the availability of resources to support their efforts in managing this critical condition.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the preparedness of nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital for managing ARDS cases.
To identify the knowledge gaps and challenges faced by nurses in the management of ARDS.
To propose recommendations for improving nurses' preparedness in handling ARDS cases.
Research Questions
What is the level of preparedness of nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital for managing ARDS cases?
What are the key challenges nurses face in managing ARDS cases at the hospital?
How can the preparedness of nurses in handling ARDS cases be improved?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses with advanced training in respiratory care are more prepared to manage ARDS cases effectively.
The availability of critical care resources positively influences nurses' preparedness for handling ARDS.
Nurses with more years of experience in critical care are more prepared to manage ARDS cases.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in critical care and emergency departments at Gombe State Specialist Hospital. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data, differences in nursing education and training, and resource constraints at the hospital. Findings may not be applicable to other healthcare facilities with different training programs or resource availability.
